Picture the Richmond / Senator Milton Marks Branch Library. It stands proudly on 9th Avenue a San Francisco landmark. This isn’t just any library. It’s a cornerstone of the Richmond District. Its history is rich and full of fascinating details.

The Richmond / Senator Milton Marks Branch Library wasn’t always here. Its first home was much humbler. In 1892 it opened at 809 Point Lobos Avenue. Imagine the Richmond District then mostly sand dunes. The library served a community growing rapidly.

Then came 1906. The great earthquake and fire devastated San Francisco. Remarkably the Richmond Branch was one of only two still functioning. It provided a vital service during those difficult times. A testament to its resilience. It moved to a temporary location at 254 4th Avenue. Right behind Blanks Candy Shop. The sweet scent of chocolate must have been a curious addition to the atmosphere.

In 1914 a new building opened. This one was special. It was the first San Francisco Public Library branch built with Andrew Carnegie’s generous funding. Designed in an elegant Italianate style it quickly became a neighborhood treasure. Senator-elect James Phelan and Mayor James Rolph were there for the dedication. A grand opening for a grand library.

Over the years the library adapted. The children’s collection grew. It moved downstairs. The space above it became a lecture hall. The library’s collection expanded to meet the growing needs of a diverse community. Books audio tapes videos and CDs in multiple languages fill the shelves. The original collection may have remained relatively small from the 1930s to the 1970s. But today the shelves have doubled.

In December 2000 the San Francisco Landmarks Board recognized its historical significance. They nominated the Richmond / Senator Milton Marks Branch Library for landmark status. A well-deserved honor. Extensive renovations followed. The library reopened in 2009. Seismically safe accessible and technologically updated. It continues to serve its community as a vital center for learning and connection. A true symbol of the Richmond District.
