Royal connections run deep here in Richmond. The town’s very name echoes a tale of kings and palaces.

Richmond owes its existence to Henry VII. In 1501, he built Richmond Palace. The palace took its name from his earldom in North Yorkshire. Richmond town grew around this royal residence.

Before the palace, the area was known as Shene. This name dates back to the 10th century. Henry VII’s new palace marked a fresh start. He rebuilt it after a fire destroyed the old Sheen Palace in 1497.

Richmond Palace became a favorite of royalty. Queen Elizabeth I spent much time here. She enjoyed hunting stags in what is now Old Deer Park. Elizabeth I even died at Richmond Palace in 1603.

The palace declined after 1649. James II ordered a partial reconstruction in 1688. It was intended as a royal nursery. By 1779, much of the palace was in decay.

However, some structures survived. The Wardrobe, Trumpeters’ House and the Gate House still stand. The Gate House dates back to 1501. In 1986, the Crown Estate Commissioners leased it for 65 years.

Richmond’s development continued. Richmond Bridge opened in 1777. It connected Richmond to East Twickenham. Georgian terraces sprung up around Richmond Green and Richmond Hill. Many are now listed buildings.

The arrival of Richmond railway station in 1846 changed everything. It connected the town to a rapidly expanding London. Richmond became a popular place to live.

In 1890, Richmond became a municipal borough. This included Kew, Ham, Petersham and part of Mortlake. In 1965, Richmond transferred from Surrey to Greater London. It became part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
