Above us looms the Richardson Road Overbridge. Did you know this bridge isn’t just a way to get across; it’s a symbol of community collaboration? The Richardson Road Overbridge gracefully arches over the Waterview Motorway, connecting New Windsor and Owairaka. This bridge opened in late February, marking a significant moment for cyclists and pedestrians. The Richardson Road Overbridge provides wide, 3.5-meter shared paths on each side. The western side even boasts a direct, off-road link to the Waterview Cycleway. This connection extends both west and east. Initially, the plans for the Richardson Road Overbridge included standard cycle lanes and narrower footpaths. However, Cycle Action advocated for a better solution. They recognized the bridge’s proximity to a premier cycleway and proposed wider, shared paths. This suggestion, possibly influenced by a photo of a European shared bridge path, was thankfully adopted. The Richardson Road Overbridge now acts as an extension of the off-road cycling network, reaching further into surrounding areas. It’s a testament to how community input can shape urban development, encouraging more people to embrace cycling. The Richardson Road Overbridge stands as a successful collaboration between NZTA, the Council, and AT. It’s a bridge to a more connected and cycling-friendly future.
