Established in 1890 Richardson High School boasts a rich history. Its first home was a humble two-room building on Old Pike Road. That road is now part of Greenville Avenue. A fire destroyed that original building. Ross Inman was responsible for the blaze. Imagine a small rural school. It served fewer than 100 students until the 1950s. Richardson High School then moved to its current location in 1961. It stands proudly at 1250 West Belt Line Road. This magnificent building is the flagship high school of the Richardson Independent School District.

For decades Richardson High School has educated generations of students. It’s grown from a small rural school to a large magnet high school. Today approximately 2770 students attend RHS. The student-teacher ratio is roughly 15 to 1. The school offers a wide array of magnet programs. These include culinary arts theater visual arts and more. The school also has award-winning teams in mock trial debate and computer science. Richardson High School is truly a center for academic excellence.

Sadly tragedy has also touched Richardson High School. In 1991 a student named Jeremy Wade Delle tragically took his own life. This event profoundly impacted the school community. The incident inspired the Pearl Jam song Jeremy. Later in 2008 the school faced another crisis. Teacher and coach Brent Archie was arrested for improper relationships with students. This was the first such incident in the school district’s history.

Despite these hardships Richardson High School continues to thrive. The school has achieved numerous accolades. It was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 1983-84. It also received the Best Practices High School award in 2006. The school’s athletic teams are also successful. Richardson High School’s men’s and women’s soccer teams were state champions in 1985. The school’s mascot is the Eagle. The Eagles share Eagle-Mustang Stadium with J J Pearce High School.

The legacy of Richardson High School is one of resilience. It’s a testament to the strength of its community. The school has overcome challenges and celebrated triumphs.
