From 1903 to 1907, and again from 1920 to 1933, Richard Lipinski served as a member of the Reichstag. He represented the Social Democratic Party and later the Independent Social Democratic Party. From 1907 to 1933, Lipinski was the district chairman of the SPD in Leipzig.
During the German Revolution, Richard Lipinski played a key role. From November 1918 to January 1919, he was Chairman of the Council of People’s Deputies in Saxony. He later served as the Saxon Minister of the Interior.
Richard Lipinski’s commitment to social justice led him to oppose the Nazi regime. In 1933, he voted against the Enabling Act. This act granted Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers. As a result, the Nazis persecuted and imprisoned Lipinski.
Richard Lipinski died in 1936. He died because of the consequences of his imprisonment. Even under the watchful eyes of the Gestapo, a thousand people gathered to pay their respects.
Richard Lipinski’s legacy lives on in Leipzig. In 1945, a street was named after him. In 2000, another street was renamed Lipinskistraße. A Stolperstein was placed in front of his former home. The home is now the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Museum. These memorials honor his contributions to social democracy and his resistance to Nazism.
