Richard Green Central Park Elementary is named after Dr. Richard R. Green. He was an African American educator. Principal Matthew Arnold says the school focuses on four key areas. Sonia Alejandro-Mattson is the bilingual kindergarten teacher. She uses 80 percent Spanish and 20 percent English. This builds English skills for ESL students. A typical day starts with breakfast. Then students have a morning meeting. They play and sing songs. This helps students and teachers connect. It builds community. Next is science taught with the ESL teacher. Literacy stations follow. Then comes lunch, recess, and specialist activities. These include gym, music, or art. The math program uses ST math. It is an app on iPads. The program is tailored to each child’s pace. Students also participate in a writers’ workshop. This involves reading aloud. Parents are also involved. CPEO courses connect parents to educational opportunities. Parents learn how to support students at home. They also learn how to communicate with school staff.
