On a quiet corner in Greenwich, tucked away from the bustling crowds, lies a simple granite rock. Its surface is smooth and weathered, yet it holds a powerful story within its inscription. This is the memorial to Flight Lieutenant Richard Carew Reynell, a young Australian pilot who met his untimely end during the Battle of Britain. Richard, nicknamed ‘Dickie’ by his friends, was a skilled aviator and a true hero. He hailed from a family of renowned winemakers in South Australia, but his life was forever changed by the outbreak of World War II. He served with distinction in No. 43 Squadron, flying the famous Hawker Hurricane, and even became a test pilot for the aircraft. His skills and courage were legendary, and he was known for his daring aerobatic displays, captivating audiences with his mastery of the skies. But on September 7, 1940, Richard’s luck ran out. While engaged in a fierce aerial battle over London, his Hurricane was struck by enemy fire and exploded, sending pieces of the aircraft crashing through the roof of St. Ursula’s Convent. Richard, although wounded, managed to bail out, but tragically, his parachute failed to open. He was just 28 years old, leaving behind a wife and a young son. This memorial, erected in 2013, stands as a poignant testament to his sacrifice. It serves as a reminder of the courage and bravery of those who fought to preserve our freedom, and it offers a glimpse into the life of a young man who gave his life for a cause greater than himself.
