You see it every day, but do you really know Reservoir? This suburb, with its name stemming from three reservoirs built in 1863, has a long and fascinating history. These reservoirs, known collectively as Preston Reservoir, still form part of Melbourne’s water supply today. Reservoir, originally part of both the Jika Jika Parish and Keelbundoora Parish, was first surveyed in 1837 by Robert Hoddle.
The suburb’s rich history is woven into its fabric. The Rose Shamrock Hotel, formerly the Rose Shamrock & Thistle Hotel, opened on Plenty Road in 1854. This bustling suburb also holds within it the Edwardes Lake Park, a 14-hectare haven of peace donated to the people of Preston in 1914 by Thomas Dyer Edwardes. Between 1919 and 1939, locals enjoyed swimming in the lake, overseen by the Preston Lifesaving Club.
The suburb of Reservoir stands today, a vibrant tapestry of modern life and historical heritage. It’s a place where the echoes of past eras mingle with the energy of the present. Look around you, and you’ll see the legacy of a community that has been shaped by the past and continues to evolve.
