Within the urban sprawl of Buenos Aires, a hidden gem awaits: the Reserva Natural Municipal Provincial Laguna Santa Catalina. The Reserva Natural Municipal Provincial Laguna Santa Catalina offers a glimpse into Argentina’s natural heritage, a testament to the resilience of nature amidst urban encroachment. Established on January 16, 1992, by Municipal Ordinance No. 6561, this 17-hectare sanctuary protects one of the last remnants of talar forest in the Greater Buenos Aires area. Originally owned by the Metropolitan Railways Company S.A. (FEMESA), the land adjacent to the Santa Catalina train station was designated as the “Santa Catalina Reserve and Educational and Cultural Park”. Later, in 1993, it was officially declared the Reserva Natural Municipal Santa Catalina. The local community played a vital role in preserving this natural treasure. They championed initiatives to prioritize native tree planting, sustainable construction, and the reintroduction of native fauna. The Reserva Natural Municipal Provincial Laguna Santa Catalina is more than just a green space. It’s a vital lung for the city, a place where the symphony of over 150 bird species fills the air. Tordos músicos, flocks of jilgueros, woodpeckers, and even birds of prey like the gavilán mixto, carancho, chimango, and owls call this place home. The reserve also shelters sixteen mammal species, including the colicorto pampeano and two bat species. Comadrejas overas, cuises, mulitas, peludos, hares, and a plethora of insects and butterflies contribute to the rich biodiversity. Lizards, snakes, and amphibians, especially the common lagarto overo, can be found if you look closely. Even a fox has been spotted in recent years. Located near Garibaldi at 2400, in Llavallol, near the Haedo-Temperley railway line, the reserve offers a unique blend of ecosystems. It features remnants of talares, mixed forests, and pampean grasslands. The most significant talar strip stretches 700 meters long and 10-20 meters wide. This area boasts a fascinating array of plant life, including tembetarí, camarámara morado, carí carí, molle rastrero, jazmín de la selva, malvisco, and chilca blanda. The talilla, known for attracting hummingbirds, finds its southernmost habitat here. The malvisco and carí carí, along with various chilcas, draw a diverse array of butterflies. The vibrant tapestry of climbing plants, including the mburucuyá, tasi, brotal, and uña de gato, adds to the reserve’s beauty. The unique air plants, claveles del aire, further enhance the talar’s distinctive character.
