Two hectares of urban wilderness. That’s the Reserva Ecológica Vicente López. A green oasis in the bustling city of Buenos Aires.

Imagine a time long before concrete and steel. A time when the Río de la Plata lapped at a much wider shore. This area. Here. Before the Reserva Ecológica Vicente López existed as we know it today. Much of the land now protected was once part of the river itself. Only a narrow strip of land near the train tracks supported vegetation. Even then it was prone to flooding during sudestadas.

Ricardo Barbetti a local naturalist championed the area’s preservation. He tirelessly advocated for its protection. His efforts culminated in 1983. The municipality designated it an Área de Preservación Ecológica. A significant first step. A decade later. A crucial agreement between the municipality and the Asociación Escuela Lincoln reshaped the landscape. Seven hectares were filled to create sports fields and a public park. Sadly. This drastically reduced the original natural area. The Reserva Ecológica Vicente López as we see it today became a much smaller remnant of what it once was. Just two hectares.

But from this reduced space. A remarkable restoration project began. The Reserva now showcases the diverse ecosystems that once thrived in the area. There’s the pampean grassland. A delicate balance of grasses and wildflowers. A battle against invasive species like Cynodon dactylon and Cenchrus clandestinus constantly threatening to overwhelm the native plants. The talar. A woodland of drought-resistant trees and shrubs. Species like Celtis ehrenbergiana espinillo and molle still survive against all odds. And the marginal forest. A lush riparian ecosystem where the laurel negro and chal-chal trees flourish.

The artificial lagoon is a fascinating feature. Created in the 1990s by enclosing a section of the river. Its water level fluctuates. Controlled by a gate. This means a different view in every season. A constantly evolving ecosystem. The floating aquatic vegetation provides a mesmerizing green carpet in warmer months. The surrounding marshes teem with life. Paja brava and totora offer nesting sites for birds. The diversity is astonishing.

More than 387 species of vascular plants have been recorded. Many native. Many reintroduced. The fauna is equally rich. Eleven fish species seven amphibians eleven reptiles and around 150 bird species call this place home. Even otters have been spotted. Butterflies particularly the diurnal species are a prominent part of the invertebrate fauna. With up to 72 species.

The Reserva Ecológica Vicente López is more than just a park. It’s a testament to the power of conservation. A living laboratory. A space to appreciate the beauty and fragility of nature. A place where the urban landscape intertwines with the vibrant pulse of the wild.
