Twenty-three hectares of reclaimed land. That’s the Reserva Ecológica Ciudad Universitaria-Costanera Norte. Imagine the transformation. Once a dumping ground for rubble now a haven for biodiversity.
This urban oasis nestled between the Rio de la Plata and the University of Buenos Aires campus boasts a rich history. For decades in the 1960s and 70s construction debris expanded the university’s footprint. The project stalled in 1980 leaving behind a wild landscape. Nature reclaimed the abandoned land. Ceibos willows and river alders thrived alongside native talas and espinillos creating a unique blend of ecosystems.
Even debris from the tragic AMIA bombing in the 1990s contributed to the area’s development. The filled-in land created an artificial gulf. This lagoon became a haven for wildlife particularly birds. Ducks and herons are common sights. Coipos a semi-aquatic rodent also call the area home.
Efforts to create the reserve began in the 1990s. These early attempts faced obstacles. In the early 2000s a plan to create a recreational park was proposed. This would have destroyed much of the natural habitat. Thankfully the vision of a nature reserve persevered.
Finally in 2012 the city legislature passed law 4096 officially establishing the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Norte. The University of Buenos Aires initially opposed the plan fearing a loss of land. But the reserve eventually opened in 2018. It’s now jointly managed by the city and the university.
Today more than 139 species thrive here. The reserve is a vital link in a biodiversity corridor stretching from the Paraná Delta. It plays an important role in environmental education and scientific research. It’s also a place for relaxation and recreation for the community.
The Reserva Ecológica Ciudad Universitaria-Costanera Norte is more than just a park. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience. It’s a symbol of collaboration between a city and its university. Above all it’s a treasure for the people of Buenos Aires. Take a moment to appreciate this remarkable urban refuge. Enjoy the scenic views and the wildlife. Let this urban sanctuary inspire you.
