Did you ever imagine a train station could hold so much history? Right here, before us, stands the Remuera Road Over-Rail-Bridge. It’s not just a bridge. It’s a gateway to the past, a silent observer of Remuera’s transformation. This bridge carries Market Road over the railway line, giving us a unique vantage point of the Remuera railway station. The station opened in 1873. It stands as one of New Zealand’s oldest island platform stations. Imagine the hustle and bustle of those early days, the steam trains chugging along, bringing passengers and goods to this bustling hub. The original station couldn’t handle the increasing traffic. By 1903, it was clear a bigger station was needed. A double track line was built to Penrose Junction, eventually extending to Hamilton. The Remuera Road Over-Rail-Bridge likely witnessed this expansion. It saw the construction of the new island platforms at Remuera, Newmarket, Greenlane, Ellerslie, and Penrose. The current Remuera station we see below was rebuilt and opened in 1907. The station building is a classic weatherboard and tile design by George Troup. It’s a charming reminder of a bygone era. The Remuera Road Over-Rail-Bridge has seen it all. From the station’s heyday as a busy freight hub, thanks to the Alltrans cargo depot in the 1970s, to its quieter present, primarily serving passengers. Even the electrification of the line in 2014, which modernized the station below, didn’t change the steadfast presence of the bridge above. This bridge, this unassuming structure, has silently witnessed the evolution of Remuera, connecting its past to its present. It’s a testament to the enduring power of infrastructure and a vital link in Remuera’s story.
