Standing before us is the Reloj Solar. This giant sculpture might look like abstract art. It actually has a fascinating story. It’s a functional sundial.

The Reloj Solar is part of the Ruta de la Amistad or Friendship Route. This route featured 22 giant public sculptures. They were created for the 1968 Olympic Games. The games took place here in Mexico City. The sculptures aimed to celebrate international friendship through art.

Grzegorz Kowalski designed the Reloj Solar. His work is distinctive. Yet its low profile sometimes makes it overlooked. Take a closer look. The Reloj Solar consists of seven concrete cones. The tallest cone reaches about five meters high.

Notice the colors. They are yellow, orange, red, and ochre. Each cone stands on a circular base. The colors weren’t always this vibrant. Originally, the sculpture had a terracotta color scheme. In 2001, The History Channel Latin America restored the Reloj Solar. Kowalski himself oversaw the restoration. He chose the more modern colors we see today.

Since the restoration, the Centro Comercial Perisur has maintained the Reloj Solar. The surrounding garden is cared for by American Express since 2010. The Reloj Solar is more than just a sculpture. It’s a symbol of art, history, and international collaboration. Next time you pass by, take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Also consider its place in Mexico City’s Olympic legacy.
