The three-part terracotta relief, “Zur Geschichte von Vegesack”, stands boldly on the parking lot of the Sparkasse Bremen in Vegesack. Created by Dorothea Muszynski in 1988, it tells the rich history of this Bremen district.

The relief depicts the origins of Vegesack, a once small village located near the mouth of the Lesum river with a natural harbor. The riverbanks were an ideal location for trade and shipping, giving it a strategic position during the early stages of its development. By the end of the 15th Century, a tavern named “Thom Fegesacke”, which stood on the shore, gave the village its name: Vegesack.

This relief embodies the essence of Vegesack – a place brimming with history and maritime significance. The story of changing power and a constant struggle for the best location for the harbour is part of Vegesack’s history as well. It was Swedish in 1653, Danish in 1712, Bremisch in 1715, belonging to “Kur Hannover” in 1741 and finally Bremisch again in 1804. The changing political landscape in the past is reflected in the three sections of “Zur Geschichte von Vegesack”, making it a work of historical art.
