Perhaps, Relau’s story begins not with grand monuments but with humble charcoal kilns. The name Relau itself is believed to originate from the Malay word for charcoal kilns. These kilns once dotted the landscape. They whisper tales of the area’s early industry. We are standing in Relau a suburb of George Town in Penang.

Relau is located 9.9 km southwest of George Town’s city center. It lies between Paya Terubong to the north and Bayan Lepas to the east. Balik Pulau is situated to the west.

Imagine Relau long before the bustling roads and modern buildings. For much of its history, Relau remained an agricultural area. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Relau transformed into a housing estate. This transformation marked a significant shift in the area’s identity.

Now let’s talk about a prominent figure linked to Relau. Chung Thye Phin. He was the fourth son of Chung Keng Quee. Chung Thye Phin served as the last Chinese Kapitan of Perak. By 1935, he was known as the wealthiest man on Penang Island. His former summer residence, the abandoned Chung Thye Phin Villa, still stands as a major landmark.

In 2020, the population of Bukit Relau reached 18755. The ethnic composition was diverse. Nearly 57% were Chinese. Malays formed 34%. Indians comprised close to 6%. This mix contributes to Relau’s vibrant cultural tapestry.

Paya Terubong Road serves as Relau’s main thoroughfare. It connects Relau with Paya Terubong to the north. It also links to Balik Pulau to the west. If you need public transport, Rapid Penang bus routes 301 and 306 serve Relau. They connect the suburb to the city center. You can also reach Queensbay Mall and the Air Itam and Paya Terubong suburbs.

Relau also has facilities for recreation and sports. The Relau City Sports Complex launched in 2017. It’s the first GBI certified sports complex in Penang. It offers swimming and diving pools. You can also find badminton courts, a gymnasium, and bicycle parking bays. The Relau Metropolitan Park opened in 2003. This park is the second largest recreational park on Penang Island. The Penang Island City Council manages it. It provides recreational amenities for residents in the southern part of the island.

Relau is a blend of history and progress. From charcoal kilns to modern sports complexes, Relau has evolved significantly. The area’s landmarks and its diverse community contribute to its unique character. It is a suburb with a story etched in its landscape.
