Reitzendorfer Windmühle

“Who built this lonely sentinel?” a child’s voice piped up from beside me. We stood before the Reitzendorfer Windmühle, its sturdy stone base a stark contrast to the swirling clouds above. The Reitzendorfer Windmühle, a silent giant overlooking the landscape, has seen more than a century of change. Built in 1861 by the miller Karl Gierth, the Reitzendorfer Windmühle originally served as a vital resource for local farmers. Before its construction, they had to travel long distances to watermills like the Meixmühle or Keppmühle to grind their grain. This windmill, initially a post mill, was later transformed into a Dutch windmill. This imposing structure provided much-needed relief, bringing the essential task of grain milling closer to home. Imagine the rhythmic whoosh of the sails as they harnessed the wind’s power, turning the heavy millstones within. The Reitzendorfer Windmühle became the heart of the community, its presence a symbol of progress and prosperity. However, the winds of fate were not always kind. A violent storm in October 1919 ripped through the area, tearing away the windmill’s sails and damaging the rotating cap. Undeterred, the miller at the time, a man named Zander, installed a diesel engine. This allowed the Reitzendorfer Windmühle to continue operating, a testament to the resilience of those who depended on it. It continued its work until 1927, a steadfast presence in the face of adversity. Years later, in 1987, a restoration project breathed new life into the aging structure. The Reitzendorfer Windmühle was transformed into a residence, a unique home with a rich history. For a time, it even housed a company specializing in the construction of historical mills. The ingenuity of the past met the present, as the restored sails once again generated energy, heating the interior until another storm in 1997. Sadly, this storm again damaged the sails, which were not reconstructed. Today, the Reitzendorfer Windmühle stands silent, its sails gone, yet its story continues to echo in the landscape. It remains a landmark of the Schönfeld Highlands, a reminder of a time when the wind provided sustenance and the Reitzendorfer Windmühle stood as a beacon of industry and community.
