How about we explore a park named after a New York City muckraker? Welcome to Riis Park. It is a green space that connects us to Chicago’s Northwest Side. More specifically it is in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood.

Riis Park spans 56 acres. It forms a rectangle with Grand Avenue to the south. Narragansett Avenue borders it to the west. Wrightwood Avenue defines the northern edge. Meade Avenue marks its eastern boundary.

But who was Riis? Jacob Riis was a journalist. He was also a photographer. He bravely documented the difficult lives of the poor and working class in New York City. His work inspired many. It brought attention to social issues. A stone stands in Riis Park. Swedish citizens of Chicago dedicated it to Riis in 1929. It honors his important work. You can find this stone in the southwest corner of the park.

The Northwest Park District acquired this land in 1916. This acquisition was inspired by a park-building movement. Jacob Riis himself helped to drive this movement. However the park’s development took over a decade.

In 1928 Riis Park finally took shape. A ski jump and golf course were installed. These additions offered new recreational opportunities for the community. Chicago architect Walter W. Ahlschlager designed the fieldhouse. This building became a central hub for park activities.

Then in 1934 a significant change occurred. Riis Park became part of the Chicago Park District. This happened after the consolidation of 22 park districts around the city. This consolidation streamlined park management. It allowed for better resource allocation.

Riis Park gained further recognition in 1995. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This listing acknowledged its historical significance. The National Register Information System ID is 95000483.

Today Riis Park continues to serve its community. It offers green space and recreational opportunities. It stands as a tribute to Jacob Riis. It reminds us of his dedication to social justice. Take a moment to reflect on the history of Riis Park. Consider the impact of Jacob Riis’s work.
