Is it possible that an island in Lake Constance is a cultural and intellectual center? Reichenau Island is such a place. It stands almost due west of Konstanz. Reichenau is a place of historical importance. It has exceptional architecture and artwork. Reichenau was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000.

Reichenau Abbey was founded by Bishop Pirmin in 724. It quickly became an influential center. The island has a total land surface of 4.3 square kilometers. Its circumference is 11 kilometers. The highest point is the Hochwart. It stands 43 meters above the lake surface. That is 438.7 meters above mean sea level.

Reichenau is connected to the mainland by a causeway. It was completed in 1838. The Bruckgraben waterway intersects the causeway. People occupied Reichenau in the Bronze Age and Iron Age. Archeological evidence suggests Reichenau was abandoned during the Roman era. It remained uninhabited until 724. Monk Pirmin received support from Charles Martel. He built a monastery on the island. The first monastery was wooden. It was replaced by a stone building by 746.

The community flourished in the early 9th century. This was under the patronage of the Carolingian and Ottonian dynasties. In 816, the monastery church was rebuilt. It became a cruciform basilica. Churches dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Mark were consecrated. Relics of St. Mark arrived at the abbey in the mid-9th century. Two further churches were built. These were consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul in 799. Another was dedicated to Saint George in 896.

The abbey’s bailiff was housed in a two-story stone building. Two more stories of timber framing were added in the 14th century. It is one of the oldest timber-frame buildings in southern Germany. Today, it is a museum of local history.

The monastic community produced influential poets and authors. Walafrid Strabo served as abbot. Hermann of Reichenau and Abbot Reginbert were scholars. The famous artworks of Reichenau are in the church of St. George. These are Ottonian murals of Christ’s miracles. They are unique survivals from the 10th century. The Plan of St. Gall may have been created on the island. It is the only surviving architectural drawing from the Middle Ages. The abbey had far-flung landholdings. One was Reichenau. It is a village on the upper Rhine in Switzerland. It was named for the abbey.

In the 16th century, the Prince-Bishopric of Constance included Reichenau. As a result, the abbey’s influence waned. During secularization in 1803, many chapels were demolished. Manuscripts and archives were given to Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. Surrounding farms were parceled and sold.

Today, the island is famous for its vegetable farms. The Wollmatinger Ried is a large nature reserve. It is a wetland area of reeds. Many birds use it as a stopover during their annual migration.

The Abbey at Reichenau celebrates its foundation in AD 724. It was the first monastery in present-day Germany. The anniversary is celebrated with a major exhibition in Konstanz. In 2000, Reichenau Abbey was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In 2023, the manuscripts followed.

Part of the Reichenau experience is visiting the three medieval churches. The Cathedral of St. Maria and St. Markus is the main abbey church. It dates mainly from the 11th century. The treasury is worth a visit. The Church of St. George has magnificent Ottonian frescoes from the 10th century. St. Peter and St. Paul features a fresco depicting the Heavenly Christ.

Reichenau. Rich Pasture. A place where art, history, and nature intertwine. It is an island that has shaped the cultural landscape of Europe. Its legacy continues to inspire and captivate.
