Established in 1961, the Registry of Marriages stands as a cornerstone of Singaporean civil unions. The Registry of Marriages safeguards records of every couple married in Singapore. It issues the official marriage certificate after the solemnization.

Civil marriages fall under the Registry of Marriages jurisdiction. These are for couples with at least one non-Muslim partner. Polygamy is strictly prohibited within civil marriages.

Picture this. It’s September 15, 1961. The Singapore Women’s Charter comes into force and the Registry of Marriages begins its work. Since then, countless couples have passed through these doors. They started their journey into matrimony.

Originally, the Registry of Marriages resided in Fort Canning Park. It was opposite Park Mall Shopping Centre. In 1983, it moved to its current location here on Canning Rise.

Did you know the Registry of Marriages plays a crucial role in administering the Women Charter Act? This act ensures certain protections and rights within civil marriages. It underscores the commitment to equality within Singaporean marriages.

The legal process for civil marriage involves several steps. Couples must register their intended date. This can be done at the Registry of Marriages or online. The chosen date must be at least 21 days. It cannot be more than three months after the registration date.

For couples with a foreign partner, at least one person must be physically present in Singapore for 15 days before the notice date. Both parties must declare their adherence to specific conditions. These conditions include age requirements. They also include the absence of any legal impediments to the marriage.

Inter-faith marriages are permitted as civil marriages. This allows a Muslim individual to marry a non-Muslim partner civilly. This includes unions not sanctioned under Sharia law.

Same-sex marriages are not allowed in Singapore. Under civil marriages, gender is determined by what is on the National Registration Identity Card.

The Registry of Marriages stands as a testament to Singapore’s evolving social fabric. It oversees the legal unions of its people. It upholds important principles of equality and due process. Remember this place. It is where countless Singaporean love stories officially begin.
