Ever wondered about a place where history and modernity dance together? That place is Regierungsbezirk Freiburg. This administrative region in Baden-Württemberg is not just a geographical area. It is a vibrant tapestry of stories. Regierungsbezirk Freiburg, also known as Südbaden until 1972, has a rich past. Its borders touch Switzerland to the south and France to the west. To the north lies Regierungsbezirk Karlsruhe and to the east, Regierungsbezirk Tübingen.

Imagine stepping back in time to 1952. This was when Baden-Württemberg was formed. Regierungsbezirk Freiburg’s authority was primarily over the former state of Baden. This area emerged from the French occupation zone after World War II. It comprised the southern part of Baden, which existed from 1806 to 1945. Thus, it was initially named Regierungsbezirk Südbaden.

The administrative and territorial reforms of January 1, 1973, reshaped Regierungsbezirk Freiburg. Areas around Rastatt and Baden-Baden went to Regierungsbezirk Karlsruhe. Überlingen and Meßkirch were transferred to Regierungsbezirk Tübingen. In return, the jurisdiction of the Freiburg Regional Council expanded to include the districts of Rottweil and Tuttlingen. This expansion meant the region now included formerly Württemberg areas. It prompted the renaming from Regierungsbezirk Südbaden to Regierungsbezirk Freiburg.

Today, the Regierungsbezirk Freiburg is a bustling hub. Its main administrative center resides in the historic Basler Hof in Freiburg im Breisgau’s old town. This building dates back to around 1500. It was constructed by Konrad Stürtzel, court chancellor to Emperor Maximilian I. The Regional Council also maintains eight other locations in Freiburg. The largest is in the Betzenhausen district.

Leading the Regierungspräsidium, with its 1700 employees, is a politically appointed official. The Minister President appoints the Regierungspräsident. This president reports to the Ministry of the Interior for Digitalization and Municipalities.

But what exactly does the Regierungspräsidium do? It handles the implementation of laws and state policies within the region. Their tasks are diverse. They include construction, forestry, healthcare, and cross-border collaboration. They also oversee agriculture, rural development, food management, and state police. The Regierungsbezirk Freiburg is also responsible for spatial planning, education, social services, transportation, environmental protection, and the veterinary sector.

Administratively, Regierungsbezirk Freiburg is divided into three regions. These regions encompass nine rural districts and one urban district. There are 301 cities and municipalities in total. The regions include Hochrhein-Bodensee, Südlicher Oberrhein, and Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg.

Economically, the Regierungsbezirk Freiburg is strong. In 2015, its gross domestic product per capita reached an index of 120. This is compared to the European Union average of 100.

As you explore Regierungsbezirk Freiburg, consider its blend of history and progress. It is a region that respects its past while embracing the future. The area is more than just a place on a map. It’s a living story. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Baden-Württemberg.
