Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is one of the largest in London. It seats over 1,240 people. Imagine watching a play as the sun sets.

Established in 1932, the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has a rich history. Robert Atkins and Sydney Carroll moved a production of Twelfth Night here. The New Theatre had unexpectedly closed. This marked the beginning of open-air theatre in Regent’s Park.

In its first full season in 1933, the theatre revived Twelfth Night. It also began its long tradition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and the Windmill Theatre remained open during World War II. Matinee shows ran due to blackouts. After the war, comedies lifted Londoners’ spirits here.

Many famous actors have graced this stage. Vivien Leigh played Anne Boleyn here in 1936. This was before her fame in Gone with the Wind. Judi Dench also has a long relationship with the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. She is currently its Patron.

The current amphitheater-style seating was built in 1974. Before that, it was a makeshift affair. In 2000, a major refurbishment improved the auditorium. The Robert Atkins Studio was also added.

The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has won many awards. These include Olivier Awards and The Stage Awards. Its productions have even transferred to the West End and North America. In 2020, it was the first theatre to reopen during the pandemic. It staged a socially distanced Jesus Christ Superstar concert.

The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is more than just a theatre. It is an experience. The sounds of nature blend with the drama on stage. The open sky adds to the magic. Whether you’re a Shakespeare fan or a musical lover, there is something for everyone here. It is a place where memories are made. The theatre’s digital archive lets you explore its history.
