Elevated above the city’s hustle, Regent Bridge stands as a testament to Edinburgh’s grand past. Regent Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a neoclassical masterpiece, seamlessly blending the old city with the New Town. Built in the 19th century, Regent Bridge gracefully arches over a former ravine called Low Calton, now Calton Road. Before Regent Bridge existed, the journey from London to Edinburgh was arduous. Travelers were forced through cramped, unfitting streets that did no justice to the city’s beauty. Sir John Marjoribanks, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, envisioned a grander entrance. He spearheaded the project to build Regent Bridge, connecting Calton Hill to Princes Street with an elegant arch. Regent Bridge officially opened in 1819. This coincided with Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg’s visit, adding a royal touch to the bridge’s inauguration. The bridge’s construction wasn’t without its challenges. Part of the old Calton burial ground had to be relocated. Solid rock was blasted. Buildings were demolished. The final price tag was a hefty £52,000, but the improved access was priceless. The land sales alone brought in an impressive £35,000. Designed by Archibald Elliot, Regent Bridge boasts a semicircular arch, 50 feet wide. Its height varies due to the sloping ground. On the north side, it stands 45 feet tall. On the south, it reaches 64 feet. The roadway is supported by a series of reverse arches. Decorative open arches, framed by Corinthian columns, adorn both ends of Regent Bridge. Waterloo Place, the street along the bridge, commemorates the famous battle fought the same year the bridge was conceived. Regent Bridge is more than just a thoroughfare. It’s a symbol of Edinburgh’s forward-thinking spirit, transforming a once-difficult passage into a majestic gateway.
