Pause. Gaze out over this shimmering expanse. This is the Regattasee. It is more than just a lake. The Regattasee is a testament to Munich’s sporting heritage and recreational spirit.
The Regattasee you see before you is actually called Regattaparksee by many locals. This artificial lake straddles Feldmoching and Oberschleißheim. It’s northwest of Munich. Its creation? The excavation of gravel for the A99 highway.
But there’s more to the Regattasee than just its origin story. It is a recreational haven. Only the north and west shores invite you for a refreshing dip. The southern third is a protected biotope. This ensures the preservation of local flora and fauna.
Look closely. You might spot some of the Regattasee’s diverse inhabitants. Red campion and meadow sage add color to the landscape. Dragonflies dart over the water. Coots and little ringed plovers are among the birds finding refuge here. The Regattasee’s clear waters even support populations of crayfish.
Notice how shallow the shoreline is. This is a deliberate design. It makes the Regattasee ideal for families with young children. The clear water and light pebbles give the lake a striking blue hue.
Take a deep breath. The air is fresh. The Regattasee is a popular destination. It is close to Munich and Dachau. Getting here is easy. You can arrive by car via the A92 or by bicycle along the B471. Despite the lack of permanent facilities, mobile toilets and kiosks cater to visitors during the bathing season. Be warned the Regattasee can get crowded. Weekends and Bavarian school holidays draw large crowds.
Just 200 meters away lies another body of water the Regattasee’s sporting sibling. It is called Regattastrecke Oberschleißheim. The Regattasee provides a place to relax.
Consider the Regattasee as a destination. It is a place where nature and recreation intertwine. Whether you’re seeking a refreshing swim or a tranquil escape, the Regattasee offers a slice of Bavarian paradise.
