The Reformierte Kirche stands before you a testament to Konstanz’s rich history. It is not the original Protestant church of Konstanz. That honor belongs to the Lutherkirche consecrated much later in the 19th century. This church though holds a unique place in the city’s religious journey.

Konstanz’s embrace of the Reformation in the 1520s was a bold move. It led to the Bishop relocating to Meersburg abandoning his seat in the city. Konstanz was among the evangelical states that presented the Protestation at the Diet of Speyer in 1529. Along with Strasbourg Lindau and Memmingen they submitted the Confessio Tetrapolitana a unique Upper German Evangelical Confession at the Augsburg Diet in 1530. The reform movement in Konstanz had a distinct character. It was a middle ground between Wittenberg’s and Switzerland’s approaches. The Blarer siblings Ambrosius Margarethe and Thomas along with their cousin Johannes Zwick spearheaded this unique reformation. They even composed several hymns included in the 1534 Konstanz hymnal some of which are still sung today. Margarethe Blarer was instrumental in establishing social support systems for the poor and sick.

The Reformierte Kirche’s story is not only one of religious innovation. It also mirrors the political turmoil of the era. The Schmalkaldic War saw the Protestants lose. Emperor Charles V imposed the Augsburg Interim in 1548. Konstanz refused to comply. The Emperor responded with a siege stripping the city of its imperial freedom. Konstanz was integrated into Habsburg Further Austria and subsequently re-Catholicized. The city’s Protestant community only re-emerged in the 19th century when it became part of the newly founded Grand Duchy of Baden. The construction of the Lutherkirche in 1865 marked a significant turning point. It was built on the 450th anniversary of Jan Hus’s death a symbolic act highlighting the enduring legacy of the Reformation.

Today as you stand before the Reformierte Kirche you feel a connection to centuries of religious and political struggle. The church represents more than just a place of worship. It serves as a living reminder of Konstanz’s unwavering spirit and its persistent pursuit of religious freedom. The story of the Reformierte Kirche is deeply intertwined with the narrative of Konstanz a city that shaped the course of the Reformation and continues to resonate with its spirit. The echoes of hymns composed by the Blarer siblings and the struggles faced during the Counter-Reformation remind us of the enduring faith that lives on within these walls.
