Hidden within Montevideo’s industrial tapestry lies the Refinería de La Teja, Uruguay’s sole oil refinery. It stands proudly in the La Teja neighborhood, a testament to Uruguay’s industrial ambitions. Established in 1937 by ANCAP, the national fuel company, the Refinería de La Teja became a symbol of national pride. Initially, it processed 600 cubic meters of crude oil daily. The refinery is a vital part of Uruguay’s energy infrastructure. The Refinería de La Teja has been a key player in supplying Uruguay’s energy needs. It has undergone various upgrades and expansions throughout its history. It processes about 50,000 barrels of oil daily. The refinery’s location in the Port of Montevideo provides efficient access for importing and exporting. Two-thirds of Uruguay’s petroleum imports come from the United States, and 18% comes from Brazil. The Refinería de La Teja produces various petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, and asphalt. The refinery isn’t without its environmental impact. A 2011 study revealed significant SO2 and NO2 emissions from the site. ANCAP schedules overhauls approximately every four years to maintain and improve operations. Despite its importance, the Refinería de La Teja faces an uncertain future. Uruguay’s commitment to renewable energy sources and its goal of zero emissions by 2035 could lead to the refinery’s closure. The government plans to transition industries like transportation towards cleaner alternatives, posing a challenge to the long-term viability of the Refinería de La Teja.
