Consider this a journey through time not just a tour of the Reducto de San Francisco Javier. This crescent-shaped high wall stands as a testament to Manila’s resilience. It is a story etched in stone and faith.

The Reducto de San Francisco Javier was built in 1773. It was constructed to reinforce the Baluartillo de San Francisco Javier. This construction was part of Manila’s fortification reinforcement. It happened after the successful British siege during the Seven Years War. Engineer Dionisio O’Kelly supervised its construction.

This reducto defended the curtain wall from the bay. It also served a dual purpose. It was a storage area for ammunition and food supplies.

But that is not all that the Reducto de San Francisco Javier holds.

Today, the Reducto de San Francisco Javier houses the chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It enshrines a copy of the image. The image is imprinted on the tilma of the shepherd. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him in Guadalupe Mexico. Pope Pius XI proclaimed Our Lady of Guadalupe the Heavenly Patroness of the Philippine Islands on July 16 1935.

It is believed that the Reducto de San Francisco Javier was built in 1662. It was part of Intramuros’ seaside defense. An earthquake in 1645 destroyed it. It was restored to its original state in 1773.

Later the Reducto de San Francisco Javier served as storage chambers. It was used by the American Army. However, it was severely damaged during the Battle of Manila in 1945. Consequently, it was restored in 1950 and again in 1983. Some say it was built to protect the Governor’s residence. The Governor’s residence was located at Fort Santiago.

As you explore the Reducto de San Francisco Javier notice the tunnel. The tunnel serves as the only passageway. It leads to the entrance of Fort Santiago. It also provides protection from the seaside.

Inside the chapel look at the wooden altar. It features carvings of cherubs and flowers in vines. The image of the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe is installed at the altar. A vassal carving sits on top of the altar. A crucified Jesus Christ crowns its peak.

Did you know that the Patroness of the Philippine Islands is also the Patroness of Mexico? The Reducto de San Francisco Javier was converted to hold the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1980.

Take a moment to ascend to the upper section of the Reducto. From there you can see the Shrine beautifully. On the top wall of the Shrine you can see the cannon fodder guarding it.

The Reducto de San Francisco Javier stands as a place of faith and history. It is a reminder of Manila’s past and its enduring spirit. As you leave reflect on the layers of history and faith. They intertwine within these walls. Remember the Reducto de San Francisco Javier. It is more than just a structure. It is a story etched in time.
