Nine distinct patterns. That’s what catches the eye at the Re-Stack Sculpture. This twenty-foot tall metal marvel dominates the plaza here in South Lake Union. Commissioned by Vulcan, Inc., the Re-Stack Sculpture is a testament to Seattle’s past and a nod to its future. The Seattle-based Lead Pencil Studio envisioned a piece that reflected the city’s architectural evolution. They achieved this by using rectangular woven wire mesh boxes. These boxes appear haphazardly stacked, yet form a cohesive, almost gravity-defying structure. The Re-Stack Sculpture isn’t just visually striking. It’s remarkably durable thanks to the Banker Wire mesh used in its construction. This same mesh allows for the intricate patterns that define the sculpture’s aesthetic. The designers wanted something that conveyed both strength and lightness. The woven wire mesh, with its unique interplay of solid metal and open space, achieves this perfectly. The Re-Stack Sculpture is more than just stacked boxes. Lead Pencil Studio incorporated nine different Banker Wire mesh patterns. These range from large, bold lock crimp patterns to smaller, more intricate designs. This variety, combined with the shimmering metal, creates a dynamic visual experience. Light filters through the different sized openings, casting unique shadows across the plaza. About half of the metal mesh has a multi-colored coating, courtesy of Millennium Tiles. The remaining portion received a conversion coating by Cleveland Black Oxide. The interplay of colors and textures further enhances the Re-Stack Sculpture’s visual appeal. The Re-Stack Sculpture stands as a testament to the versatility of Banker Wire’s woven wire mesh. It has transformed a simple plaza into a dynamic urban space. It is a place where art, architecture, and material science converge. It is definitely worth a visit and contemplation.
