“Ravine Touterelle Bridge reconstruction to start on Monday.” It sounds like a headline doesn’t it? Here at Ravine Touterelle, we stand at a place undergoing constant change.

Ravine Touterelle is located within the district of Castries. Castries is one of the ten districts in St. Lucia a small island nation in the Caribbean. The capital of St. Lucia also called Castries is located in this district.

Castries has a rich history. It was renamed in 1785 after Charles Eugene Gabriel de la Croix Marquis de Castries a French Minister. The area was formerly known as Carenage.

The Department of Infrastructure Ports and Transport started demolition and reconstruction on Monday March 6 2023. This work was part of the Government of Saint Lucia’s Community Road Rehabilitation Programme. Due to the bridge reconstruction there was no vehicular access beyond the bridge. However a temporary bypass was erected for pedestrians.

Castries is home to nearly one-third of the island’s population. Castries boasts the island’s busiest sea port. Much of the island’s history is visible in the city through its mix of French and British architecture.

Castries Harbour one of the best deep water harbors in the Caribbean was originally a volcanic crater. The harbor became famous during World War II when German submarines torpedoed two ships there. Today cargo ships and cruise liners use it for trade and tourism.

The Great Fire of Castries claimed 40 blocks of homes and businesses on the evening of June 19 1948. Overnight 809 families were left homeless. The fire gave rise to two important outcomes. Derek Walcott wrote a poem about the tragedy which started his career in literature. Class prejudices were obliterated paving the way for modern infrastructure.
