Standing here in front of Ravenswood United Methodist Church, you can almost feel the echoes of history whispering through its sturdy brick walls. This isn’t just any church; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and the power of community that has thrived in this neighborhood for over a century.

Ravenswood United Methodist Church, a true cornerstone of the Ravenswood community, first opened its doors back in 1873. It started its life as a small wooden structure, brought in from downtown Chicago by raft and rollers. It was all thanks to the generosity of Mr. Van Allen, who donated the land for this very spot. The little church was eventually moved to its current location at Sunnyside and Hermitage, and later, in 1889, the impressive sanctuary building you see today was constructed.

What makes this church truly unique is its story of perseverance and unity. After the devastating Great Chicago Fire, the original church was destroyed. In 1873, the First Methodist Church of Chicago, with great generosity, gave the Ravenswood Methodist Church a little wooden structure that had been their temporary place of worship. This small act of brotherhood set the stage for a church that would become a beacon of hope and support for its community.

In 1987, Ravenswood United Methodist Church merged with Christian Fellowship United Methodist Church, a congregation formed by Japanese Americans who had been relocated to Chicago from internment camps during World War II. This powerful union showcased the church’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity, a spirit they continue to embrace today.

As you gaze at the beautiful stained-glass windows, imagine the countless prayers that have been whispered here, the joys and sorrows shared within its walls, and the generations of families whose lives have been touched by the warmth of this church. This church, with its strong foundation in faith and a legacy of unity, stands as a symbol of hope and resilience in the heart of Ravenswood.
