Ravenswood Manor Park

Can you imagine a park that was once a bustling community center? This is Ravenswood Manor Park. This beautiful green space has witnessed the changing face of its neighborhood for over a century. Standing right in the middle of Ravenswood Manor, this gem of a park is over one acre in size. It’s been a gathering place for families and neighbors for generations. They have enjoyed concerts in the summer and played in the playground, and the community still embraces this park like a treasure. It wasn’t always like this. Back in 1913, a real estate developer named William Harmon started building the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood. Residents created their own park district and named this triangular patch of land Ravenswood Manor Park. The park was originally dotted with trees, shrubs, benches, a pergola, and a small building. But the small park district had limited resources and couldn’t offer many recreational facilities. So they focused on landscaping. This is why the park still has lush greenery and beautiful flowers today. The building was a focal point for the community. It housed the park district meetings and hosted a variety of community groups. Even the Ravenswood Manor Gardens Community Club held their meetings there, handing out cigars to encourage attendance! Things changed in 1934 when the Chicago Park District took over. They renovated the landscape, planted hundreds of shrubs, and created a stunning perennial garden. The building, however, came down in 1956. The community continued to grow, and in 1969, playground equipment was installed. Ten years later, in 1989, the park was enlarged when Eastwood Avenue was closed. Now it’s all green space! Ravenswood Manor Park continues to offer a place for residents to relax, play, and enjoy the beauty of nature. The park serves as a reminder of the neighborhood’s rich history and its enduring appeal to modern-day Chicagoans.
