Once a boating training center, Raven’s Ait is now a privately run venue. It hosts catering, conferences, and weddings. The island offers a unique escape. It is surrounded by water and lush greenery.

In the 19th century, Kingston Rowing Club called Raven’s Ait home. The club was founded in 1858. Later, the Navy League took over. They established TS Neptune. Originally, the island’s buildings were wooden. They were painted “Sea Cadet Blue”. In 1971, the buildings were rebuilt. Haymills Construction replaced the old wooden structures.
During the 1980s, the Inner London Education Authority used Raven’s Ait. It served as a training center for youth and community workers. It was also a water sports facility. Kingston Borough Council bought the island in 1989.
In 2009, squatters occupied Raven’s Ait. They wanted to turn it into an eco conference center. The council took legal action. The squatters were evicted.
Raven’s Ait was accredited by the Royal Yachting Association and the British Canoe Union. It offered training in these disciplines. The island also provided mooring for Sparkle. This catamaran was designed for people with physical disabilities.
Motor boating skills were taught using naval stock boats. These included a 25-foot naval cutter. Pulling skills were taught in admiralty whalers. Sailing boats included ASCs, Bosuns, and Cadets. Several schools used Raven’s Ait for water sports. These schools included Epsom College and Forest Hill School.
Today, Raven’s Ait is a popular venue for weddings and corporate events. Its location on the Thames offers a memorable backdrop. The island combines history with modern amenities. It provides a unique setting for any occasion.
