Jakarta’s Ratu Plaza. A curious tale unfolds within these walls. Ratu Plaza opened its doors on December 12, 1980. It quickly became a hub for tech enthusiasts. Ratu Plaza was even known as “e-Mall”. It offered a vast selection of electronics and gadgets across four of its five floors. Ratu Plaza became popular with both locals and expats. It housed over 6,000 square meters of retail space. Ratu Plaza’s history, however, wasn’t just about gadgets and gizmos. In the 1980s, it housed the first Nike showroom in Indonesia. Other big brands like Kicker’s and Levi’s also had a presence in Ratu Plaza. This mix of technology and fashion created a unique shopping experience. Sadly, Ratu Plaza also faced challenges. Its Carrefour supermarket, later replaced by Lotte Mart, experienced gas leaks in 2007 and 2008. These incidents caused concern and even prompted discussions of shutting down the supermarket. Despite these setbacks, Ratu Plaza has endured. It continues to be a landmark in Jakarta.
