A colossal library stands before you. This is Rami Yenimahalle home to the Rami Library. It wasn’t always this way.
Once upon a time this land belonged to Rami Mehmed Pasha. He served Sultan Mustafa II. The Sultan gifted him this expansive area. It was called Rami Barracks Farm. It provided logistical support for the army. Ottoman sultans even used it for short trips. They traveled by horse or royal boat.
Later in 1826 military barracks were built here. This was after the Janissaries were disbanded. The barracks became known as Rami Barracks. They served as Sultan Mahmud II’s headquarters during a war. An engineering school even operated within the barracks.
After the First World War the barracks were damaged. They still functioned though. They served the military until 1971. Then they were handed over to the civil administration. For a time food wholesalers used the space. It was a bustling market.
Then came a remarkable transformation. In 2010 Istanbul became the European Capital of Culture. The idea to create a library here was born. A massive restoration project began in 2014. It lasted until 2023. The project carefully preserved the original structures. They used natural materials and special techniques. A damaged mosque was also repaired.
The result is breathtaking. The Rami Library is now the largest library complex in Turkey and Europe. It boasts an indoor area of 36000 square meters. It also has a courtyard of 51000 square meters. It is indeed a sight to behold a monument to history. It stands as a testament to the past a beacon for the future. This is Rami Yenimahalle a place transformed. A place of learning and culture. A place where history lives and breathes.
