Picture this a quaint village nestled within the bustling city of Budapest. This is Rákospalota Óregfalu. We stand in the heart of what was once a thriving agricultural community. Its history stretches back to the Árpád era. Imagine the fields stretching out before you. Farmers toiled the land. The Szilas brook meandered nearby providing water.

Around 1200 AD a church was erected. This marked the beginning of a true settlement. It began as Nyír Birch but later became known as Palota Palace. This was after the landowner’s castle. The 16th and 17th centuries were harsh. Buda was under Turkish occupation. Rákospalota Óregfalu however survived. The strong Calvinist faith of its residents helped them persevere.

Following Buda’s liberation in 1696 Rákospalota Óregfalu prospered. Market gardening and agriculture flourished. Two baroque churches were built. One for the Calvinists one for the Catholics. The original church stood on a little hill next to the Szilas brook. This Catholic chapel remains today a testament to the enduring faith of the community. It was built in 1735.

In 1846 a pivotal moment arrived. Hungary’s first railway line between Pest and Vác reached Rákospalota. The Palota Forest became a popular retreat. Restaurants and entertainment venues sprang up. A new suburb emerged next to the station. Wealthy Pestians built grand villas.

By the 1890s Budapest’s expansion engulfed Rákospalota Óregfalu. The village council sold farmland for new housing. New settlements such as Újfalu Benkő-telep Kovácsi-telep and Kertváros emerged. These were homes for Budapest’s working class. The old peasant village became known as Óregfalu Old Village. A Gothic Revival cathedral a Lutheran church a Moorish synagogue a new Calvinist church and a town hall were built. This reflected the town’s growing wealth but social tensions arose between new and old residents.

Between August and November of 1919 a Romanian garrison occupied Rákospalota Óregfalu. This was after the Hungarian Bolshevik army was defeated. The peasant farmers of Óregfalu maintained their traditions religion and identity until the 1950s. Rákospalota became a town in 1923. In 1950 it became part of Greater Budapest.

Today as we stand here we see a blend of past and present. The quiet streets bear witness to centuries of history. The remnants of old peasant houses stand alongside modern buildings. Rákospalota Óregfalu a small village with a big story. A story of resilience faith and transformation. A story etched into the very fabric of this neighbourhood. A story that continues to unfold.
