Built in 1894 the Rákoskeresztúri Szent Kereszt felmagasztalása templom stands before us. Its imposing presence speaks volumes. It whispers tales of a community’s enduring faith. A faith that blossomed in the heart of Rákoskeresztúr.

This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the history of Rákoskeresztúr. A village that predates the church itself. Evidence suggests a church existed here as far back as Saint Stephen’s time. That’s over a thousand years ago. Think of the generations who worshipped within these walls.

The current structure isn’t the first on this site. Previous churches stood here. They succumbed to the relentless Rákos stream’s floods. Repeated flooding submerged the village and its church. So they rebuilt. The 1741 church lasted until 1893. Finally the current church replaced it. It’s a significant upgrade. A larger space was needed. The 1894 church measured 350 square meters. A large space for the predominantly Protestant village.

Rákoskeresztúr became part of Budapest in 1950. It’s now District XVII. The church became a central point for the district. However the surrounding area changed dramatically after 1975. Small garden plots were replaced by ten and four-story apartment buildings. The original impoverished population was replaced by a largely unemployed one. This affected the community.

Yet the Rákoskeresztúri Szent Kereszt felmagasztalása templom remained. It remained a beacon of hope and faith. A symbol of resilience. It’s more than a place of worship. It embodies the story of Rákoskeresztúr. A story of survival. A story of transformation. A story written in stone brick and unwavering faith.
