The hill’s design is a marvel of architectural blending. Edwin Lutyens a British architect played a key role. His design incorporated grand classical elements. He beautifully blended them with details inspired by Indian architecture. Lutyens and Herbert Baker worked together on the Viceroy’s House and the Secretariat buildings. Their initial plan placed the Viceroy’s House at the hill’s peak. The secretariats were to be lower down. This changed. Both buildings were ultimately constructed on the plateau. The construction involved multiple contractors. Sir Sobha Singh was a key contractor.
The Central Vista project is reshaping Raisina Hill. The Prime Minister’s residence will be relocated. It will be situated behind the existing South Block. The Vice President’s residence will also move. Its new location will be behind North Block. The Vice President’s new enclave will span 15 acres. It will feature 32 five-storey buildings. The maximum height of these buildings will be 15 meters. The Prime Minister’s new office and residence will cover 15 acres too. Ten four-storey buildings will be constructed. Their maximum height will be 12 meters. There will also be a building for the Special Protection Group.
