How about we observe the Rainham Viaduct stretching before us? It is a key part of the High Speed 1 line. This viaduct plays a crucial role in connecting London to the Kent Coast.
The Rainham Viaduct is one of three viaducts on this section. These viaducts span the area between Dagenham and the Thames Tunnels. This entire section is only 13 kilometers long.
Its construction was part of a larger project. It was known as Contract 310 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link or CTRL. Section 2 of the CTRL covered 39 kilometers from St Pancras to Southfleet Junction. The contract was worth a staggering 178 million pounds.
The construction of the Rainham Viaduct wasn’t easy. The area consisted of unstable marshland. Builders had to bore a series of holes and then reinforce them. They used steel bars and concrete to stabilize the ground. The steel bars were joined by a horizontal framework. This framework further strengthened the concrete slab under the tracks. The Railway Magazine documented these construction details in June 2003.
Eurolink won Contract 310 on 1st October 2001. Eurolink was a joint venture. It was a collaboration between Miller Civil Engineering Services Ltd and Vinci Construction Grands Projets. Preparation work began immediately. Actual on-site building commenced in March 2002. The original schedule aimed for completion by December 2004.
The Rainham Viaduct itself extends for approximately 520 meters. It is a substantial structure that ensures smooth rail passage.
The opening of the CTRL’s Section 2 was highly anticipated. It was initially planned for the first quarter of 2007. This would complete the entire route from London to the Kent Coast. However, there were some delays. Driver training didn’t start until 20th July 2007. Scheduled international passenger services finally began on 14th November 2007.
Even before the official opening, the Rainham Viaduct saw some action. On the night of 4th December 2006, a Eurostar formation passed over it. Class 373 set Nos. 3017/3018 made the journey. Class 66 No. 66088 dragged the formation. This test run checked clearances in Dagenham and Thames Tunnels. The Railway Magazine reported this event in February 2007.
