The rain gauge here at Hamilton Park is pretty nondescript, just your average, simple metal cylinder on a stand. But don’t let its plain appearance fool you, it’s been quietly witnessing the history of this park for decades. Hamilton Park opened in 1904 as part of a system of smaller parks designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers. It was intended to bring fresh air and recreation to overcrowded neighbourhoods. Just across the street, a thriving community grew up around a hospital built there in the 1870s. Today, the hospital is gone, but the park remains, and so does the rain gauge, standing silent but steady, patiently recording the rainfall, the wind, the changes in the seasons, and the stories of Hamilton Park.
