Ragunan Zoo first opened its doors way back in 1864. Originally, it was known as Planten en Dierentuin. The zoo was the brainchild of a Dutch East Indies flora and fauna organization. A prominent Indonesian painter, Raden Saleh, even donated land for its establishment. It started in the Cikini area of Central Jakarta. Then it moved to this current location in 1966. The zoo covers a massive 140 hectares today. That makes it Jakarta’s largest park.

Don’t miss the Schmutzer Primate Centre within Ragunan Zoo. Pauline Antoinette Schmutzer’s donation made this possible. It spans 13 hectares. Here, gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans live in spacious enclosures. The orangutan enclosure was designed to mimic their natural habitat. Thick dark glass allows us to observe the orangutans without disturbing them.
Ragunan Zoo is easily accessible. You can take the TransJakarta Corridor 6 bus. It stops right in front of the zoo. Once inside, grab a map. The zoo isn’t arranged in a grid. The map will guide you to the animals you want to see. Check the feeding schedule too. Watching the zookeepers feed the animals is a treat.
The pelican pond is near the main entrance. It has been a landmark since Ragunan Zoo began. The children’s zoo is another highlight. It features a giant fish from South America, the Arapaima Gigas.
