On a lonely island, 14 kilometers south of Singapore’s bustling shores, rises the steadfast Raffles Lighthouse. This isn’t just any lighthouse. It’s a sentinel, a beacon, and a testament to Singapore’s rich maritime history. Raffles Lighthouse stands on Pulau Satumu, aptly nicknamed “one tree island.” This small, rocky outcrop is home to the second oldest lighthouse in Singapore. The lighthouse, named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of modern Singapore, has guided ships through the treacherous Singapore Strait since 1855. Its creation wasn’t instantaneous. Merchants and mariners pleaded for a guiding light in the Strait for years. Finally, in 1854, the foundation stone was laid, and the lighthouse began operations the following year. Constructed from granite quarried from Pulau Ubin, Raffles Lighthouse was initially manned by a dedicated team of seven lightkeepers. They meticulously maintained the wick burner, which was later replaced by a kerosene mantle burner. The keepers also ensured the smooth rotation of the 2nd Order optic, a task that involved manually rewinding a weight-driven mechanism every hour. Raffles Lighthouse transitioned to electric power in 1968 with a 4th Order optic and a powerful incandescent bulb. This increased its visibility range to 22 nautical miles and reduced the required crew to four. Another transformation occurred in 1988 when solar power replaced the generators, further automating the lighthouse and reducing the crew to two. Today, Raffles Lighthouse remains a vital navigational aid, its beacon flashing three times every 20 seconds. Although inaccessible to the public, its gleaming white tower and century-old brass fittings remain a testament to its enduring legacy. Raffles Lighthouse stands as a silent guardian, a testament to ingenuity and a tribute to the vision of Sir Stamford Raffles himself.
