What if I told you this tunnel holds a tragic melody? The Rafael Mascarenhas Tunnel echoes with the memory of a young life cut short. Rafael Mascarenhas, a musician and student, was just 18 when his life ended here on July 20, 2010. The Rafael Mascarenhas Tunnel, originally called the Acoustic Tunnel, now bears his name. It’s a poignant reminder of the tragic event that unfolded within its walls. Rafael, son of actress Cissa Guimarães, was skateboarding with friends inside the tunnel. It was closed for maintenance, a routine occurrence between 1:10 am and 4:10 am. However, on that fateful night, there were no signs indicating the closure. Two cars entered the tunnel, reportedly using an emergency access point. One, a Fiat Siena, struck Rafael at high speed. The driver, Rafael de Souza Bussanra, fled the scene. Rafael Mascarenhas was rushed to Miguel Couto Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The Rafael Mascarenhas case became a symbol of injustice. It highlighted police corruption. Security footage revealed that police stopped Bussanra but released him after he offered a bribe. The officers were later expelled from the force. The investigation into Rafael Mascarenhas’s death was extensive. A crime scene reconstruction involved his friends, the passengers of both cars, and experts. The driver, Rafael Bussanra, was eventually indicted for intentional homicide, procedural fraud, fleeing the scene, and bribery. The Rafael Mascarenhas Tunnel stands as a memorial. It reminds us of a promising life tragically lost. It also serves as a symbol of the fight for justice against corruption. Rafael’s memory lives on, not just in the tunnel’s name, but also in the hearts of those who loved him.
