Miklós Radnóti was born in Budapest. He came from an assimilated Jewish family. He later converted to Catholicism in 1943. Many Jewish writers converted to Christianity at that time. It was because antisemitism was pervasive in Hungarian society.

Radnóti’s life took a dark turn in the early 1940s. He was conscripted into the Hungarian Army. Being Jewish, he was assigned to an unarmed labor battalion.
