Gazing upon the tranquil beauty of Radnor Gardens, can you sense the echoes of its past? Radnor Gardens, a riverside haven in Strawberry Hill, whispers tales of centuries gone by. Originally created in 1903 from two riverside properties, Radnor House and Cross Deep House, Radnor Gardens has blossomed into a cherished green space. Radnor House, the estate’s namesake, sadly fell victim to a bomb in 1940, but its memory lives on in the Gardens. Remnants of its walls, a poignant reminder of its grandeur, are marked by commemorative stones. Two 18th-century structures, a charming gazebo and a Grade II listed summer house, also stand as testaments to the site’s rich history. The gardens expanded northward during World War II, absorbing the land of two bombed and demolished houses. Wander along the riverside paths and you might encounter the faint outline of a former creek, a ghostly trace of Cross Deep Ait, a marshy island once connected by footbridges. In 1903, the Ait was raised above flood level, but the creek wasn’t filled until 1965. A plaque in the rose garden marks the astonishing height of a flood in 1774, its finger pointing to a mark eight feet above sea level. The Twickenham War Memorial, a poignant tribute to those lost in war, stands proudly near the river. Unveiled in 1921, it was intentionally placed within a vista from the Royal Star and Garter Home on Richmond Hill. The Centenary Gates, redesigned in 2014 to commemorate the start of World War I, further enhance the gardens’ historical significance. Radnor Gardens today is a vibrant tapestry of nature and recreation. Ancient willows grace the riverbank, a marked ash tree stands watch against dieback, and a newly planted monkey puzzle tree adds an exotic touch. A playground, a bowling green, and the Strawberry Hill Bowling Club offer opportunities for leisure and community. Although the onsite cafe is currently closed, its community notice board still serves as a local hub. So, as you depart from Radnor Gardens, carry with you not just the image of its present beauty, but also the echoes of its fascinating past.
