Ever wondered what secrets the Parisian sky holds beyond the twinkling lights? Right here before you stands the Radiotelescope de la Villette a silent sentinel of the cosmos.
This isn’t just any antenna. It’s a 10-meter diameter parabolic dish a powerful instrument designed to capture the faint whispers of hydrogen atoms across the universe. It was installed in March 1986 a testament to the scientific spirit of the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie and the Parc de la Villette.
The Radiotelescope wasn’t merely a decorative piece. Its creators envisioned a tool demonstrating astrophysics as an experimental science even in the heart of a bustling city. Its size makes it visible a beacon for scientific curiosity. Originally intended for observing the Sun and other radio sources its story is one of both ambition and unexpected setbacks.
The Radiotelescope was built and tested at the Nançay Radio Observatory in 1984 under the guidance of radio astronomer François Biraud. Documents show the first reception of solar photons on January 4 1984 followed by observations of Taurus A and Cassiopeia A.
But the Radiotelescope’s journey wasn’t smooth. In 1990 during landscaping work a cable connecting it to the Cité des Sciences was accidentally severed. Lack of funds and expertise led to its abandonment for over 33 years. It slowly rusted a victim of neglect and time.
However the story of the Radiotelescope doesn’t end in rust. In 2008 the Association des Radioamateurs de Paris began its rehabilitation. This monumental task involved painstaking rewiring and repairs. Despite setbacks including a broken motor reducer the project persevered.
A new non-profit organization Dimension Parabole took over in 2018 completing the restoration. They repaired the motorization installed a new positioning system and created a reception chain. In July 2019 the Radiotelescope saw its first light capturing the signal from our very own galaxy. This was no small feat given the significant state of disrepair.
Electrolab hackers in Nanterre played a crucial role in 2020 repairing the declination axis motor reducer. This enabled the Radiotelescope to resume recording signals from the Sun and prominent radio sources like the Crab Nebula.
Today the Radiotelescope stands as a symbol of perseverance human ingenuity and the enduring quest to understand our place in the universe. It stands as a unique example of a radio telescope that functions within a city. It continues to function collecting data and inspiring awe in those who gaze upon it.
