“Can you imagine a time before Radio LORA München?” an old man with a twinkle in his eye once asked me. We were standing right here, outside the station on Schwanthalerstraße, the air buzzing with a symphony of urban sounds. Radio LORA München. Since 1993, it has been the voice of the unheard, a platform for the unconventional, a haven for independent thought. The man, a self-proclaimed ‘LORAnaut’ since the early days, went on to share tales of its tumultuous beginnings. He spoke of passionate volunteers, cramped basement studios, and a fierce battle against legal challenges and financial constraints. He described the joy of hearing their voices broadcast for those first, precious 26 minutes on air in October 1993. It was a David-and-Goliath struggle, with Radio LORA München defying the odds to become a cornerstone of Munich’s media landscape.

Today, Radio LORA München, with its eclectic mix of over 120 thematic shows, is a testament to the power of community. Over 250 volunteers, fuelled by sheer enthusiasm, bring you stories from the heart of Munich. They tackle issues ranging from local politics and environmental concerns to global affairs and social justice, giving a voice to those often unheard in mainstream media. Did you know that in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Radio LORA München didn’t just survive, it thrived? The station adapted, embraced home studios, and saw two of its very own, Sarra Choauch-Simsek and Alexandra Rudat, win prestigious journalism awards. This spirit of resilience is woven into the fabric of Radio LORA München.

As you stand here, listening to the hum of the city, remember this: each voice you hear on Radio LORA München represents a story, a struggle, and a triumph. This station embodies the spirit of Munich, a city known for its open-mindedness and vibrant cultural scene. So, tune in, listen closely, and let Radio LORA München paint you a picture of this city that’s as raw, unfiltered, and real as it gets.
