Let’s step inside Radio-Initiative Dresden e.V. on Riesaer Straße. Imagine the energy. Volunteers are buzzing around. They are preparing shows. The air crackles with creativity.

coloRadio broadcasts on 98.4 and 99.3 MHz. You can also listen via live stream. Tune in Monday to Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. CET. On Saturdays and Sundays, it broadcasts from noon to midnight. That is 49 hours a week.

The station’s content spans four main groups. These are magazines, music, politics, and art and culture. Most programs are monthly and in German. Some broadcasts are in other languages like English, Czech, Spanish, and Chinese.

What makes coloRadio unique? It is the lack of a chief editor. Decisions are made by a plenum. This plenum includes broadcasters and association members. Editorial independence is paramount.

coloRadio sees itself as a local Dresden station. It fosters exchanges with other free radios. This happens both in Germany and abroad. They use the official program exchange portal of the Bundesverband Freier Radios.

From April 17 to May 13, 2010, coloRadio went off FM. This was due to a dispute over transmission costs. However, it continued as a live stream.

Since January 2021, coloRadio has been broadcasting 24/7 via live stream. In June 2023, coloRadio began broadcasting on DAB+. Now, it can be heard digitally in Dresden and Eastern Saxony.

Radio-Initiative Dresden e.V. is not just for adults. It is especially suitable for children and young people. A children’s and youth editorial team exists here.

The monthly journal of the station is called “Transmitter.” The studio is located in the Zentralwerk in Dresden-Pieschen since December 10, 2016.

coloRadio is a member of several associations. These include the Sächsischer Landesverband Freier Radios e.V. and the Bundesverband Freier Radios e.V..

So, next time you are looking for something real, tune into coloRadio. It is a voice for Dresden. It is a testament to the power of community radio. The Radio-Initiative Dresden e.V. makes it all possible.
