This isn’t just a tomb. It’s a story etched in stone. The Račić Family Mausoleum in Dubrovnik’s Saint Rocco Cemetery is more than just a burial place. It’s a poignant memorial built in 1922 by the renowned Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The family tragedy that inspired its creation is as moving as the mausoleum itself.
The original site held a Saint Rocco Chapel. Before that perhaps a medieval church dedicated to Saint Tryphon occupied the same hallowed ground. The Račićs however faced a different kind of devastation. In 1919 the Spanish Flu swept through their family. Ivo Račić the successful ship-owner his wife Mare and their children Marija and Edi all perished within days.
Their daughter Marija had a special bond with Meštrović. She had requested him to design a “lasting residence” for her family. Little did she know how soon that would be needed. The resulting mausoleum became Meštrović’s first architectural work. It won him the Grand Prix at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale.
The octagonal structure with its Greek cross-shaped chapel is a marvel. Intricate reliefs and sculptures adorn every surface.
