In its early years R L Turner High School occupied a red brick building known as Old Red. This building housed all grade levels. Later high school students gained their own dedicated structure. This building now serves as DeWitt Perry Middle School.

The name R L Turner High School came about in 1962. It honors Robert Leon Turner the district’s superintendent from 1945 to 1962. The school remained the sole high school in the district until the 1970s. Today the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District has four high schools.
