Originally named the Quezon City Executive House it stands before you. This building is now known as the Quezon City Reception House. It was built to accommodate visiting dignitaries.
Let’s delve into the story of this interesting place. The Quezon City Reception House sits on the land once occupied by the controversial Boracay Mansion. Some media outlets still refer to it by that name. Construction began on April 5 2013. The project aimed to create an official residence for Quezon City’s Mayor. It would also host foreign dignitaries. The construction occurred in two phases.
The first phase had a budget of P45 million. This phase focused on the structural foundations. These initial works started on March 1 and were projected to finish by August 28 2013. The total budget reached at least P90 million. The executive residence occupies 900 square meters of the 7200 square meter property. The building includes five bedrooms. Four have full baths with bathtubs. The ground floor has three conference rooms. There is also a facility with eight office spaces for transient staff. A museum showcasing Quezon City’s history is also on this floor.
In 2016 Vice President-elect Leni Robredo considered the property as her official seat. She saw it as a simpler alternative to the Coconut Palace. The Coconut Palace was expensive to maintain. Robredo’s inauguration took place at the Quezon City Reception House.
Joy Belmonte then Vice Mayor of Quezon City offered the Quezon City Reception House to Robredo. This occurred after Robredo’s search for a new office became known. There was an initial misunderstanding. City Administrator Aldrin Cuña made a press statement. It suggested the mayor disagreed with the offer. Mayor Herbert Bautista clarified his position at a press conference. He stated it would be an honor for Quezon City to host the Office of the Vice President.
Undersecretary Boyet Dy Robredo’s chief of staff clarified some details. The Vice President’s office would still use offices at the Coconut Palace. They would also use the Philippine National Bank Financial Center in Pasay. This would continue until the existing contract expired. By June 18 2016 contractor Marigold Development Corporation had completed 80 percent of the preparations. The Mayor’s Office in the Quezon City Reception House became available for Robredo’s use on July 1.
Sara Duterte Robredo’s successor also used the Quezon City Reception House temporarily. In July 2022 she moved the Office of the Vice President to Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong. This location was closer to the Department of Education in Pasig where she also served as secretary. Duterte plans to establish a permanent structure for the Vice President. Previous vice presidents had only used temporary locations.
