Once dubbed a “school of the future,” Queensmead School stands before us. Its story is one of innovation and adaptation. Queensmead School opened its doors on September 8, 1953. It was designed as a secondary modern school. The original plan was to accommodate 720 pupils aged 11 to 15. However, it started with 402 pupils and 19 staff members.
Queensmead School was quite advanced for its time. It featured modern architecture. Advanced soundproofing was a key element. This included double-glazing. Ceilings were made of sound-absorbent material. There was even air conditioning. These features were deemed necessary. The nearby Northolt airport was very noisy.
The Minister of Education, Sir David Eccles, visited Queensmead School on December 2, 1955. He came to view the buildings. The gymnasium was still unfinished. The official opening ceremony took place on December 14, 1955. Alderman Mrs. Crump officiated. She was the Chairman of Middlesex Education Committee.
Queensmead School faced potential closure in 1983. It was again suggested for closure in 1990. This was due to a surplus of secondary school places.
Today, Queensmead School is a co-educational academy. It caters to students aged 11-18. The school has over 1,000 students. Queensmead School offers many facilities. These include 10 science laboratories. There are also four design and technology workshops. Art students benefit from three studios. Sixth formers have an additional working area. The school provides facilities for 2D and 3D media. A darkroom supports photography. The performing arts suite includes a music room. There is a technology room. A recording studio and two rehearsal rooms are available. A dance/drama studio completes the suite.
Sports facilities are abundant at Queensmead School. You can find four tennis courts. Four netball courts are on the grounds. There are seven badminton courts. Grass pitches accommodate various sports. These include two 11-a-side football pitches. There are also two nine-a-side football pitches. A rugby pitch is available.
Queensmead School prides itself on inclusive programs. They implement a Special Educational Needs policy. The school believes all students are unique. Each has their own skills and talents.
Students from Osaka Gakugei Secondary School in Japan recently visited Queensmead School. They experienced a day in the life of the academy. The Japanese students participated in lessons. They met fellow students. They exchanged gifts. The Osaka Gakugei students performed a dance.
Queensmead School continues to evolve. It provides students with a wide range of opportunities. The motto “Excellence Through Learning” guides the school community. Queensmead School strives to ensure that every student achieves their full potential. The school was rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted in 2008. In July 2022, the rating changed to “Good”. Alumni include Lee McQueen. He won The Apprentice in 2008. Band members from Scouting for Girls also attended Queensmead School. Singer Elyar Fox is another former pupil. Professional athlete Daniel Bramble walked these halls. Screenwriter Daran Little honed his craft here. Footballers Chris Mepham and Tariq Lamptey also attended. Comedian Tiff Stevenson completes the list of notable alumni. Queensmead School has shaped many successful individuals.
